Use our tips

These tips have worked for ex-smokers, and could work for you too.

Tips for taking control

  • Let yourself run out of ciggies – tell yourself you’ll get more later.
  • Make certain places, like your house, no smoking zones.
  • Get rid of lighters, ashtrays and other stuff you associate with smoking.
  • Make a list of all the things fags are stealing from you – time, cash and more.
  • Imagine what a life free of fags would be like – write about it, or draw it.

Tips for cravings and stress

  • Concentrate really hard on something for 30 seconds, like the palm of your hand.
  • Clean the house when you’re desperate for a fag.
  • Chew gum if you usually smoke when you’re on the phone.
  • Find a new hobby that will take the place of smoking.
  • Breathe deeply to calm yourself down when you’re stressed.
  • Cut back on drinking alcohol – it makes you more likely to smoke.
  • Keep a pack of cards around the house to keep your hands busy.
  • Get in touch with other smokers for moral support – why not try our forums?

Tips for rewarding yourself

It’s really important to reward yourself as you go about quitting. Making it through the day deserves a celebration – it’s not easy, so well done!

  • Save cash you’d spend on fags and buy yourself something nice each day.
  • Replace each ciggie with something you really like, such as your favourite sweet.
  • Look in the mirror every morning and tell yourself you’re doing great.
  • Set bigger rewards up – if you go smoke free for a week, treat yourself to a meal out.

Tips for staying positive

Giving up isn’t easy, and it’s really common for people to have slip ups. In fact, it takes most smokers several attempts before quitting. These tips will help you keep a positive frame of mind.

You can try:

  • Feeling really stressed? Try listening to some relaxing music.
  • If you have a fag don’t think you’ve failed – it’s just a slip up.
  • Replace your ashtray with a photo of someone you really love.
  • Stick notes around your house to remind you of things you hate about smoking.

Just imagine how much extra money you'll have in your pocket when you quit smoking. It's amazing to think about how much money you have spent over the years on smoking. Our cost calculator will show you just how much money you could be saving and what you could be spending it on.
